On Sunday 10 April, on an unseasonably warm day, the club held an Open Day to celebrate the new clubhouse facility which was officially opened by LTA Chief Executive, Roger Draper.
Over 100 people attended the event during the afternoon - new members, old members, prospective members and those locals just interested in a cup of tea and a slice of cake to view our fantastic new facilities.
Roger Draper awarded the club Beacon Status, which shows the club is committed to providing affordable tennis to the local community. The club also received its Clubmark Award, which is a national all sports quality award that ensures clubs have policies and schemes in place to encourage and protect junior sports people.
Panos Kontogiannis, chairman of Caversham Park said: "We are delighted to be awarded Beacon status and become part of the AEGON Parks Tennis programme. We have had six brand new floodlit courts and a clubhouse built so we can now offer top quality tennis facilities to the community."
During the afternoon prospective members were able to take to the courts and join existing members in friendly games of doubles tennis. Coaches also ran sessions with those who may not have played tennis since leaving school, and to sample the range of coaching on offer by GDT.
Three courts were filled with junior and mini tennis players with Dave, Reece, and Chris, the club’s three full-time coaches, leading about 50 children from 4 to 18 years through a series of training sessions and games.
Everyone got a chance to see how the game should be played when Gary Drake (of GDT Coaching), Dan Lobb (of GMTV), David Collins, and Mike Wyeth - all former professional British tennis players - took to the courts for a very competitive set of tennis.
Our raffle had prizes kindly donated by local businesses including Decathlon Sports, Country Gardens, Bina Tandoori, Waitrose, Budgens, and all three club coaches from GDT.
We would like to say thank you to the many people involved in making the day a success, from those who volunteered on the day, to those who made the delicious sandwiches and cakes that were available, to the many senior and junior members who came along and played tennis on the day.

The open day was a great success and thanks also has to be given to the hard work and commitment of the club committee, coaches, and club members who have ensured that Caversham Park Tennis Club remains in the heart of Caversham Park and the surrounding community.
Future events are planned over the next few months, including our Wimbledon Ballot Night social on Saturday 14 May, and Open American Tournament on Saturday 25 June.
